A picture released on May 13, 1955 shows the Soviet delegation arriving at Warsaw aerport to attend the Communist Bloc Conclave bringing together the eight East European countries prior to the signature of the mutual defense Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance commonly known as the Warsaw Pact. From left to right : Romanian Premier Georgiu Dej, First Secretary of Polish Central Committee Bierut, Marshal Nikolay Bulganin (hat in hand), Marshal Ivan Konev (uniform, saluting), Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov, and Defence Minister Marshal Georgi Zhukov (uniform, saluting). The Treaty of the Warsaw Pact was signed on May 14, 1955 in the Warsaw Radziwill Palace in response to West Germany joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1955.
