You're reading: Ukraine confirms 113 COVID-19 cases, fourth death from disease

Ukraine now has 113 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in 13 of the country’s oblasts and the city of Kyiv, according to the Health Ministry of Ukraine.

One more person has died from the disease, the Ternopil Oblast operational headquarters announced on March 25. It is the fourth death from the novel coronavirus in Ukraine.

The victim was a 68-year-old man from Ternopil Oblast who contracted the disease at a funeral attended by an infected priest.

Within a few days, the man’s health deteriorated and he started to suffocate. He was then hospitalized at a medical facility in Ternopil Oblast.

As of March 25, there are 38 confirmed coronavirus cases in Chernivtsi and one death, 31 in the city of Kyiv, 22 in Kyiv Oblast, five in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, four in Ternopil Oblast and one death, two in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, two in Zhytomyr Oblast and one death, two in Zaporizhia Oblast, two in Lviv Oblast, one in Volyn Oblast, one in Donetsk Oblast, one in Luhansk Oblast, one in Odesa Oblast and one in Cherkasy Oblast.

On March 24, the first COVID-19 cases were identified in Volyn, Luhansk, Odesa and Zaporizhia oblasts.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, one patient has officially recovered and was discharged from the hospital.

The death of a 56-year old woman from Ivano-Frankivsk was announced on March 19. She had been diagnosed with the influenza A virus complicated by pneumonia, but lab work in Kyiv confirmed the case to be COVID-19.

The second fatal case was a 33-year-old woman from Chernivtsi Oblast who died on March 17. The first Ukrainian to die from the coronavirus on March 13 was a 71-year-old woman in Zhytomyr Oblast.

Globally, there are 422,959 patients infected with the coronavirus. Some 109,144 people have recovered, 18,907 cases have proven fatal.

To stop the virus from spreading, Kyiv will tighten restrictions on public life starting March 25. According to the latest requirements, no more than one person per 10 square meters can be in a supermarket or pharmacy at the same time.

The new rules will be in effect until the situation improves, according to a statement of the Kyiv City Council.
