Moscow is skeptical about rumors of an alleged Russian plot to change the regime in Ukraine, as well as about the alleged funding of Ukrainian presidential candidate Volodymyr Zelensky’s campaign by people associated with Russian business and political circles.
“These rumors cannot be described as anything other than absurd,” an informed source told Interfax.
It is no coincidence that rumors alleging Moscow’s funding of the Zelenskiy campaign are appearing shortly before the runoff election, it said.
“It’s noteworthy that this ‘information’ has been leaked just days before the presidential runoff, when the rating of incumbent President Petro Poroshenko is lagging far behind that of his rival,” the source said.
The Ukrainian Security Service said on Wednesday that it was verifying the alleged funding of the Zelenskiy campaign by representatives of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” and those close to Russian business and political circles.
The runoff election will take place in Ukraine on April 21.
