You're reading: SBU: Businessman Nahorny detained, indicted on charges of treason, fraud

The SBU Security Service of Ukraine has reported that Tymofiy Nahorny, a businessman, former husband of Olympic gymnastics champion Lilia Podkopayeva, has been detained; he has been indicted on charges of high treason and fraud.

“Yes, [he] has been detained,” press secretary for the SBU Olena Hitlianska told Interfax-Ukraine on Oct. 8.

According to the SBU, Nahorny was detained on Oct. 2, as part of criminal proceedings under Article 111 (high treason) and Article 190 (fraud) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The next day he was indicted on charges with committing crimes under Part 1 of Article 111, Part 2 of Article 15, and Part 4 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

“Law enforcement authorities detained Tymofiy Nahorny in Kyiv after having established the circumstances of the crime,” the SBU said.

At the same time, Nahorny’s friend, Danylo Miro, wrote on Facebook, that Tymofiy was in a detention center without giving other details.

The SBU said Kyiv’s Pechersky District Court on Oct. 4 chose a measure of restraint against Nahorny. He was to be detained with the possibility of bail worth Hr 528.6 thousand, or about $66,000.

“Kyiv’s prosecutors have lodged an appeal with Kyiv’s Appeals Court against the decision of the investigating judge of Pechersky District Court on the preventive measure in connection with the amount of the bail along with the measure of restraint in the form of detention,” it said.
