You're reading: SAPO: Prosecutor in court announces indictment against Omelyan

At a meeting of the High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine (HACC) on Oct. 21, the prosecutor announced the indictment in criminal proceedings on charges of the former Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine in declaring false information, Volodymyr Omelyan, the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) has reported.

“The SAPO prosecutor in the Anti-Corruption Court at the next meeting announced the indictment in the criminal proceedings on the charges of the former Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine in declaring false information,” SAPO said on its Facebook page.

According to the prosecutor’s office information, the panel of judges also determined the order and scope of the study of evidence in the case.

The next hearing is scheduled for October 10 at 10:00.

On October 22, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) reported that an indictment against Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Volodymyr Omelyan, who is charged with illegal enrichment and declaring inaccurate information, had been submitted to Kyiv’s Solomiansky District Court for consideration.

Earlier, on September 13, 2018, NABU notified Omelyan of suspicion of committing criminal offenses under Part 3 of Article 368-2 and Article 366-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (illegal enrichment and declaring of false information).

In turn, Omelyan said that he connects the suspicion of illegal enrichment with the reforms he was conducting, the beginning of the election in the country and the NABU’s several-year case of ex-deputy Mykola Martynenko. He also said that he rejected corruption charges against him and did not intend to resign from the post of minister. In addition, he stated about the alleged cooperation of the NABU leadership with Ukrainian politicians, pressure on him by this anti-corruption body. The minister also announced his intention to defend his name, honor and dignity in court.

On September 14, 2018, Kyiv’s Solomiansky District Court released Omelyan against guarantees of Youth and Sports Minister Ihor Zhdanov. On September 16, it became known that NABU allowed Omelyan to go on business trips abroad. On September 19, the Solomiansky District Court of Kyiv decided to seize the minister’s property.

On February 22, 2019, NABU reported that an indictment against Omelyan had been submitted to the Solomiansky District Court of Kyiv for consideration.

The investigation established that in 2015, while in the position of Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, he acquired ownership of assets – the 2015 BMW X5 and cash in the amount of $90,000 and EUR 25,000 – the legality of which is not supported by evidence and whose value significantly exceeds its legal income. In addition, the detectives announced that the minister declared inaccurate information in the declaration of property and income.

On April 3, the Solomiansky District Court of Kyiv closed criminal proceedings in connection with the decriminalization of the crime.
