MUNICH – Head of Ukraine’s Mission to NATO Vadym Prystaiko believes that the referendum on Ukraine’s accession to NATO is an ineffective instrument of influence on the alliance.
“Referendums on such complicated issues as global security are ineffective … Unfortunately, those who think that this is a lever and NATO will understand and say “ok” – then not,” he told reporters at the Munich Security Conference.
According to Prystaiko, NATO knows that the majority of citizens in Ukraine want the country to join the alliance.
“NATO also understands that some of these thoughts are fueled emotionally, because Ukraine is at war, and they do not understand that NATO is not going to defend now. People want someone to protect them, but this is unreal now,” the official added.
