Mass protests and the standoff between the authorities and the opposition that has led to casualties in Venezuela are the results of the populist politics of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said.
“We are facing a high risk of populism. Some do not understand what it means and says we’ll have fixed prices, lower than market ones, on certain foods people buy. […] This is what Nicolas Maduro did in Caracas, Venezuela,” Poroshenko said at a breakfast hosted by the Ukrainian House in Davos on Jan. 24.
Venezuelans took to the streets because their patience ran out, he said.
“Millions of Venezuelans said ‘no’ to Maduro and to populism,” Poroshenko said, commenting on the mass protests against Maduro’s policy that began several days ago.
