Over the past few years the exclusion zone around the Chornobyl nuclear power plant in the Kyiv region has been transforming into a place for the introduction of cutting-edge technologies and innovations, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said in his address on the occasion of the Day of Commemoration of the Participants in the Emergency Management of the Disaster at the Chornobyl NPP.

“It can be said without exaggeration that thanks to the enthusiasm, responsibility and high professionalism of the people who work there, as well as great international support, the Chornobyl zone is finally becoming a territory of change. I am convinced that, despite the challenges and difficulties of the current time, the authorities should use all the available opportunities to ensure a decent life for Chornobyl victims, step by step,” Poroshenko said.

At the same time, the president said that since the start of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, a real threat of the emergence of new large-scale disasters has come to exist.

“Therefore, in this hybrid war, we are forced to resort to enhanced security measures at nuclear power plants and other strategic facilities to protect them from possible attacks by terrorist-sabotage groups and the latest cyber threats,” he said.

The Ukrainian head of state thanked all those involved in the emergency response to the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. “Ukraine will never forget their feat and self-sacrifice for the sake of future generations. We cherish the memory of the heroes who left this world prematurely,” added Poroshenko.
