It is not expedient for Ukraine to postpone the reform of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), as this could undermine the trust of its allies, Deputy Head of the NATO Representation Office in Ukraine Sharon Irwin has said.
The reform of Ukraine’s SBU Security Service was emphasized as a key priority, both in the comprehensive package of assistance to Ukraine, which was agreed at the NATO-Warsaw Summit in 2016 and in the annual national program of Ukraine. It is not advisable to continue postponing this critical reform because it will seriously undermine confidence in the readiness of the country’s leadership, Irwin said, speaking at the roundtable talks in Kyiv on October 10.
Irwin recalled that reforming the SBU is one of the main in reforming the national security of Ukraine.
According to her, the reform should make the SBU a demilitarized, depoliticized, effective structure for ensuring internal security with intelligence functions and crime prevention.
Irwin noted that Ukraine’s partners in NATO had participated in the development of a concept for the reform of the Security Service, and would also continue helping Ukraine along the way.
