Dmytro Tymchuk, a lawmaker with the 80-member People’s Front faction, was found dead in Kyiv on June 19, Ukrainian media reported.
Tymchuk was found with a gunshot wound to his head. Authorities are yet to determine whether it was a murder, a suicide, or an accident. Tymchuk wasn’t alone in the apartment, according to the National Police Chief Serhiy Knyazev.
Anton Gerashchenko, a lawmaker from the same party, claimed that it appeared that Tymchuk accidentally shot himself while cleaning a firearm. Gerashchenko has been known to give misleading comments to the media in the past.
Tymchuk grew famous in 2014, when he surfaced as a commentator on Russia’s war against Ukraine. He often seemed to have inside information about the events at the front lines, which quickly made him a popular blogger and commentator in the Ukrainian media. Riding the wave of fame, he got elected into parliament in 2014 on the People’s Front party ballot.
Tymchuk was present at the parliament’s session as of 10 a.m. on June 19, according to the parliament website.
Back in 2014-2015, the Kyiv Post republished many of Tymchuk’s military blogs, widely popular updates on the war in eastern Ukraine.
