You're reading: Kyiv planning to open Zolote checkpoint after disengagement

The purpose of disengagement in Zolote in Ukraine’s Luhansk region is to create a safe zone, including for opening a checkpoint in that village, Oleksandr Borshchevsky, Ukraine’s chief representative at the Joint Center for Control and Coordination (JCCC), said.

“The main aim of the removal is to create a one by one kilometer safe zone precisely in that area for the purpose of providing public safety in the event of a Zolote checkpoint opening, which we think it will. It was the same purpose in Stanytsia Luhanska,” Borshchevsky said at a briefing in Kramatorsk on Oct. 29.

While the forces are pulling out, the shelling abates, he said.

“The idea is simple: the troops that are there should not see each other physically. Previously, they were within 500-600 meters from one another,” he said.

Zolote, along with another village, Petrivske in Donetsk region, are two pilot areas where the Donbas warring sides are to disengage.
