The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has pointed out the importance of having the approved governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) for strengthening stability and independence of the central bank and expressed hope that the issue would be settled soon.

“We welcomed the President nominating a candidate for the position of Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, and we look forward to Parliament coming to a decision on this nomination soon,” IMF Resident Representative in Ukraine Goesta Ljungman responded to a request of Interfax-Ukraine.

He said that the transformation of the NBU into a modern central bank focused on price stability and financial stability is an important achievement of the past years.

“A strong and independent central bank is crucial for macroeconomic stability and growth,” he said.

As reported, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on January 18, submitted draft decrees to the Verkhovna Rada on the dismissal of Valeriya Gontareva from the post of head of the National Bank of Ukraine and the appointment of Yakiv Smoliy to this post.

Gontareva in April 2017 reported on the decision to resign and on May 11 appointed her first deputy Yakiv Smoliy acting head of the central bank.

Under the Constitution of Ukraine, the NBU governor is appointed by the parliament at the president’s proposal for a seven-year term.
