Head of Donetsk Military-Civil Regional Administration Pavlo Kyrylenko has met with Foreign Minister of Denmark Jeppe Kofod to discuss the water supply problems caused by hostilities in Donbas.

“I told Mr Kofod that the war has negatively influenced the Water of Donbas company, which supplies water to the entire region, including its controlled and uncontrolled districts. Hostilities are the most common cause for damages in the critical infrastructure and they pose a constant threat to stable work of the company,” Kyrylenko said on Facebook on Feb. 7.

He added that the problem is also aggravated by a 41 million euros debt to the Water of Donbas company for water supply services in the temporarily occupied districts as of the beginning of 2020.

Kyrylenko also said an auditor was hired at the expense of the funds of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) last week in order to analyze the financial and operational condition of the Water of Donbas company. The results of the audit will be ready in October.

“The water supply system will be modernized in four main directions: restoration of water supply, stable round-the-clock water supply, quality of drinking water, energy efficiency and energy independence,” Kyrylenko said.

“We are seeking state and international support for the implementation of these plans. I assured [Kofod] that we are ready to consider all possible options of cooperation also with Denmark,” he said.
