Former head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, has died, the UGCC information department reported.
“At 18:30, on May 31, 2017, Major Archeparch Emeritus of the UGCC Lubomyr (Husar) passed away aged 84 after a serious illness,” the report says.
Husar was born in Lviv in 1933. In December 2000, Pope John Paul II named Husar apostolic administrator of the Ukrainian Greek Major-Archeparchy of Lviv and in January 2001 the Ukrainian Greek synod elected him Major Archbishop. From 2005 until 2011 he was primate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. In 2011, he resigned for health reasons.
Lubomyr Husar was one of the recognized moral authorities for Ukrainians. Some rankings quoted him among the top hundred most influential people of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church operates on the whole territory of Ukraine with the largest number of parishioners residing in western regions and in the countries with Ukrainian diaspora.
