The number of officially confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ukraine has reached 48,500 as of 9 a.m. on July 5.
In the past 24 hours, health authorities confirmed 823 new cases of COVID-19. During this same period, 215 people were hospitalized. Among newly confirmed cases, 53 were children and 53 were medical workers.
Twenty-two people died, bringing the total death toll in the country to 1,249 since the beginning of the pandemic. Additionally, 221 patients have recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to 21,376.
The regions with the highest numbers of newly registered cases are Lviv Oblast (138), Donetsk Oblast (81) and Zakarpattia Oblast (107).
A total of 9,934 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were administered across the country during the past 24 hours. In addition, Ukrainian laboratories carried out 4,023 antibody tests (ELISA).
On July 4, Health Minister Maksym Stepanov said that, in those Ukrainian regions where more people were diagnosed with COVID-19 — like Volyn, Zakarpattia and Rivne Oblasts — authorities had already started to prepare additional hospitals due to the “significant growth of patients with coronavirus disease.”
During his morning briefing on July 5, Stepanov shared some non-coronavirus news: For the first time in Lviv, a city located 500 kilometers to the west of Kyiv, doctors had conducted a heart transplant two days ago.
Stepanov said that he has set a two-year goal for the Health Ministry to provide all the necessary conditions for doctors and a legal framework to allow organ transplants to be performed in Ukraine. That would mean that, in the future, Ukrainians would not need to go abroad for these procedures.
