You're reading: About 70% of Ukrainians think president should enter direct talks with Russia

Some 40.4 percent of Ukrainians believe that Ukraine’s president must seek direct dialogue with Russians for the sake of establishing peace in the east of the country, while 30 percent believe that the president should conduct such negotiations. These are the results of a poll conducted from June 13 to June 21 by the Oleksandr Yaremenko Ukrainian Institute for Social Research and the Social Monitoring Center.

Some 10.4 percent of respondents categorically opposed such a decision, and 8.3 percent rather opposed it, while 10.9 percent found it difficult to answer.

Some 54.8 v of respondents believe or are inclined to believe that the president should engage in direct dialogue with the leaders of Russia-backed separatists in order to establish peace in the east of the country.

Some 60.7 percent of Ukrainians believe or rather tend to believe that Ukraine should make compromises for the sake of restoring peace and returning the occupied territories, while 24.2 percent hold the opposite opinion and 15 percent were undecided.

Some 37 percent of Ukrainians support the solution to the problem of the uncontrolled territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions in the form of granting these territories a special status, which provides for autonomy within Ukraine, while 18.2 percent support the continuation of hostilities aimed at restoring Ukraine’s full control over these territories by military means. Some 17.3 percent favor official recognition of the fact that these territories in the coming years cannot be returned to Ukraine and their isolation.

Some 49.5 percent of respondents would support or rather support the decision on granting autonomy within Ukraine to the uncontrolled territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions for the cessation of hostilities and the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Donbas.

The nationwide survey of the population was conducted by the Oleksandr Yaremenko Ukrainian Institute for Social Research and the Social Monitoring Center in a personal formalized interview (face-to-face) at their place of residence. The field phase of the survey was conducted from June 13 to June 19, 2019. The sample is representative by age (18 years and older), gender, type of settlement and region. Some 3,000 respondents took part in the survey. The level of cooperation of respondents was 51 percent and the results of the survey have a margin of error of +/- 1.8 percent.
