501 Ukrainian Children Killed During Invasion: UN Report

The number of children who are known to have died as a result of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine has now reached unbelievable levels. As at the end of March the deaths of 501 Ukrainian children have been recorded.

The figure was released by the UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), which has been documenting civilian casualties in Ukraine since 2014.

The news is part of the UN agency’s latest update which showed that Ukraine suffered a total of 765 civilian casualties during March 2023, which included 178 deaths and 587 injuries. During this month alone, eight children were killed and 27 injured, primarily from artillery fire, mines and explosive remnants.

China's ambassador to the European Union, Fu Cong, has emphasized that the People's Republic of China did not support Russia in the war against Ukraine or provide them with weapons. The ambassador made this statement before the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron and the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to China. This was reported by The New York Times on Wednesday, April 5.

 

Just three weeks prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Presidents Vladimir V. Putin and Xi Jinping signed a joint statement declaring an unrestricted friendship between their countries.

Two Inefficient Government Agencies Tracking Economic Crimes Face Reform or Elimination

Ukrainian authorities are planning to reform its two most problematic government agencies - according to Yaroslav Zheleznyak of the Holos (Voice) opposition faction in the Ukrainian Parliament. The lawmaker is currently heading a commission whose mandate is to investigate possible violations of Ukrainian legislation by government officials.

 Last January, in an interview with Kyiv Post,  he named the three most corrupt government entities comprising Customs, the National Agency for the Investigation and Management of Assets Derived from Corruption and Other Crimes (ARMA), and the Economic Security Bureau (BES).

Russia Summons French Diplomat Over Ukraine Atrocity Claims

Russia on April 4 said it had summoned France's charge d'affaires in Moscow to protest "false publications" by the French embassy about alleged atrocities in Ukraine blamed on the Russian army.

Moscow "strongly protested against the statements published by the embassy on social media", the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

"It is categorically unacceptable to make false accusations against our military," the ministry said, accusing France of "actively supplying military equipment and ammunition to the Ukrainian army and thus doing everything possible to prolong hostilities".

According to Moscow, the offending French statements include mention of the massacre attributed to Russian forces in Bucha, a town near Kyiv where the bodies of civilians were discovered after the withdrawal of Russian troops.

OPINION: Murder at Café Putin

Deadly political intrigue is rapidly building inside of a Russia that is increasingly burning out of control on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s watch. This past Sunday, in a St. Petersburg café purportedly owned by Yevgeny Prigozhin, pro-war Russian propagandist Vladlen Tatarsky was assassinated when a statuette he was gifted exploded. Prigozhin, meanwhile, in his capacity as head of the Wagner Group, was 1,000 miles away from the scene of the crime, lifting a flag over the Central Administration building in Bakhmut, Ukraine, declaring victory.

Russia Says Ready to Return Ukraine Children if Parents Request

Russia's children's rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova, wanted by the International Criminal Court for the "deportation" of Ukrainian children, said Tuesday, April 4, she is ready to send children back to Ukraine if their families request it.

Ukraine accuses Russia of having "stolen" more than 16,000 children since the start of its offensive more than a year ago.

Russia says it is "saving" the children from combat zones and that it has a procedure in place for them to be reunited with their families.

Trump Charged With 34 Felony Counts, Pleads ‘Not Guilty’

The 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump, on April 4 was charged by the Manhattan district attorney in New York with “falsifying business records” in an alleged attempt to suppress information that would lead to negative information during his 2016 election campaign.

During the arraignment the 76-year-old former president Trump, who was not handcuffed, pleaded not guilty to all 34 felony counts of the indictment based on a crime that carries a maximum punishment of up to four years in prison.

Kyiv Post Morning Memo – Everything You Need to Know on Tuesday, April 5

Good morning from a grim and cold Kyiv, where the sun and all other signs of a coming spring have gone back into hibernation. The night in the capital and throughout most of Ukraine was relatively calm. 

The key event for today, which we will be keeping our eyes on, is President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Poland, Ukraine’s key ally and one of the most generous supporters. Zelensky is coming at the invitation of President Andrzej Duda. Unlike previous international visits by Zelensky, the Warsaw trip has been made public in advance by the Office of the President of Poland.

EXPLAINED – Ex-US President Bill Clinton Says He Feels ‘Terrible’ About the Budapest Memorandum

In an interview with Irish news service RTÉ released on Tuesday, April 4, former U.S. President Bill Clinton expressed regret over the 1994 Budapest Memorandum.

“I feel a personal stake because I got them [Ukraine] to agree to give up their nuclear weapons. And none of them believe that Russia would have pulled this stunt if Ukraine still had their weapons,” Clinton said.

Ukraine’s Upcoming Offensive - Russia is Warned: “Leave or Be Destroyed”

President Voldymyr Zelensky, made his most aggressive declaration yet gave Russian troops the option of leaving the country immediately or risking annihilation in the face of his country’s long-awaited Spring offensive, Tuesday news reports said.

 Asked by reporters about the country’s military plans in the coming weeks, Zelensky said "I’m not going to talk about specifics, because I’m not going to give the terrorists from the Russian Federation the opportunity to prepare for our plans for liberation. But it will happen, and they should know that. They still have time to leave, otherwise we will destroy them."

 Zelensky made the comments, reported by the Ukrinform news agency, during a tour of a school basement that been used by Russian troops in March 2022 to imprison 367 local residents, including 50 children and several babies in the northern village Yahidne.
