Ukrainian canoeists Liudmyla Luzan and Anastasia Chetverikova have won a silver medal at the finals of the women’s C-2 500-meter canoe sprint at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
With a time of 1:57:499, the Ukrainian duo pipped both Canada and Germany to finish line with meters to spare, with China taking home the gold medal for the event.
This is not Luzan’s first medal in the 2020 Olympic Games, having already taken bronze in the women’s C-1 200-meter canoe sprint.
Luzan had previously won gold at the 2021 canoe sprint European Championships in Poznań and silver at the 2014 youth Olympics in China.
Chetverikova also competed alongside Luzan in the 2021 European Championships, taking home gold, and won bronze in the 2019 C-1 500-meter World Cup caneo sprint event.
The win marked Ukraine’s fourth silver medal, shortly followed by another silver medal in the men’s middle weight boxing event.
In total, Ukraine will now take home 16 medals, including 1 gold, 5 silvers, and 10 bronze.
According to the Ukrainian Olympic committee, Ukrainian athletes will receive financial rewards for success at the Olympic games. For bringing back a gold medal, athletes can expect to be compensated with $125,000 or $80,000 dollars for silver.
