Counterintelligence officers of the State Security Service (SBU) on July 13 announced they apprehended a Ukrainian agent of Russia’s military intelligence in Kirovohrad oblast.

According to the SBU, the alleged agent gathered information about local officials and military personnel, especially about their trips to Russia and occupied parts of Donbas, as well as information on their families and property.

Russia’s officers planned to use this information to entice these people to Russia or occupied parts of Donbas and recruit them as agents.

The arrested suspect was allegedly paid in rubles through his bank card.

SBU officers searched the suspect’s home and seized phones, bank cards of the Russian Sberbank and corporate ID cards of Russian commercial and municipal entities.

The suspect is has been charged with treason and may face up to 15 years in prison.
