“The Vuhlehirsk thermal power plant has been the only state-run power plant using coal of gas grade G. Coal supplies have been impossible for eight days because of the ongoing hostilities,” he told reporters in Kyiv on Feb. 3.

As the Vuhlehirsk thermal power plant is the only state-run thermal power plant in Ukraine using that kind of coal, there is a surplus of G grade coal and state-run mines producing it have lost their market.

According to Ziukov, DTEK produces G grade coal for its thermal power plants.

“So, 52,000 miners have lost a source of funding, i.e. state-run mines have no market to sell their goods,” the deputy minister said.

The probability of exporting G grade coal mined by state-owned companies is very low because a high content of sulfur makes this coal unwanted on global markets.
