19-year-old Yaroslava Mahuchikh has won bronze for Ukraine in the women’s high jump at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games with fellow Ukrainian athlete Iryna Herashchenko coming in fourth place.

Succeeding in jumping a height of 2 meters, Mahuchikh entered into contention for a medal, however she failed two attempts to jump heights of 2.02 and 2.04 meters, ultimately earning her the bronze medal.

Gold in the event went to the Russian Olympic Committee representative Marai Lasitskene who successfully jumped a height of 2.04 meters. Silver was awarded to the Australian athlete Nicola McDermott.

Having taken up athletics at the age of 7, Mahuchikh received the 2019 Rising Star Award at the European Athletics Golden Tracks awards in Tallinn.

At 17-years-old, Mahuchikh was named Honoured Master of Sport in Ukraine in 2019 after winning silver in the high jump at the World Championships in Qatar and gold at the Youth Olympic Games in 2018.

Mahuchikh won Ukraine’s 18th medal of the Olympic games and their 12th bronze. Ukraine now ranks 16th in the Olympic rankings by number of medals received.
