German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in a televised Christmas address wished everyone peace in the new year and called on his compatriots to show solidarity with Ukraine.

That's according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"Our dearest wish this year is that peace should reign again... But it must be a just peace that neither rewards the land grab nor leaves the people in Ukraine to the arbitrariness and violence of their occupiers," Steinmeier said.

In his opinion, a quick end to the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine is not in sight.

According to Steinmeier, the Germans are afraid of Russia's brutal attack on Ukraine and the terrible suffering of Ukrainians, the return of the war to Europe, as well as a risk of escalation.

"Until peace can come, it is a human imperative to help those who are attacked, threatened and oppressed," the president said.

He added that he is proud of his country, where so many people extend a helping hand, because they feel responsible for others and for society as a whole.
