One soldier has died and another seriously injured after a car drove into a military checkpoint in Kyiv.

 

According to police, the incident occurred just after midnight on July 25 in the Sviatoshynskyi district of the capital, five minutes after the city’s curfew came into force.

 

One 49-year-old National Guard soldier died from his injuries at the scene and his 26-year-old colleague was hospitalized in serious condition with various injuries.

 

Police said a driver born in 2000 was detained at the scene.

 

CCTV of the incident shows a car driving at speed before ploughing into the checkpoint.

 

The prosecutor's office opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Art. 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Violation of the rules of road safety or operation of transport by a person who caused the death of the victim or serious bodily harm).

The driver faces up to 8 years in prison.
