A Russian lawmaker has expressed outrage over an episode of “Family Guy” that depicts Chelyabinsk in Russia as a grim, depressing backwater populated by criminals and alcoholics, and constantly exposed to radiation and various other health hazards.
Yana Lantratova said the cartoon was “deliberately offensive” and “part of a deliberate work against the country,” calling for its broadcasting to be restricted.

“In books, textbooks, movies, and even cartoons, they purposely create an image of a country where everyone is unhappy with life, drinking, using drugs, and taking bribes,” she said. “I hope the management of Russian TV channels understands this and will limit the broadcasting of some stories.
“It’s a deliberately offensive artistic image that has nothing to do with reality. Would I want my son to see this cartoon? No,” she added.

In the new episode of the American series, the characters travel to Chelyabinsk. In the episode, the city is referred to as “the Ural Chicago,” with ruined houses and residents drinking in the morning and reading the newspaper Russia Yesterday.
Chelyabinsk is an administrative center in Russia and home to numerous heavy industries. In 2021 it was ranked the most air polluted city in Russia.
What few understand: this video is authentic (satirically drawn, but real). I visited Chelyabinsk (and was nearly gunned down there) in 2003, it looked exactly like that, and the region had the Russia-most-nuclear-polluted area (Techa incident). Here is how the city looks now. https://t.co/arW3KwJRh5 pic.twitter.com/W2D67ZNU6c
