On October 11, 2011, Pechersky District Court in Kyiv sentenced former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko to seven years in prison for overstepping her authority when signing 2009 gas contracts with Russia. She has served her sentence in Kachanivska Penal Colony in Kharkiv since late December 2011.
On May 9, 2012, Tymoshenko was transferred to Central Clinical Hospital No. 5 in Kharkiv to undergo a treatment course in line with recommendations made by doctors from the Berlin-based Charite Clinic.
Meanwhile, a court in Kharkiv is considering another criminal case against the ex-premier on the activities of the United Energy Systems of Ukraine (UESU) Corporation. Tymoshenko does not attend court sittings on the case. The hearing has been postponed several times due to Tymoshenko’s bad health condition. The ex-premier refuses to participate in the hearing via a video conference.
Tymoshenko is also charged under other criminal cases on fraud during the procurement of ambulance cars, and another involving money received under the Kyoto Protocol.
