Ukraine is a country with low English proficiency.

The country has dropped six spots, taking the 49th place among 100 countries in the latest ranking of English proficiency, published by the Sweden-based international education company EF Education First in October 2019.

In 2018, however, Ukraine performed better, making it to the “average proficiency” category with its 43rd position.

But the latest ranking shows Ukraine as one of the worst countries in Europe in terms of penetration of the English language, again placing it in the “low English proficiency” category.

EF Education First has been compiling the ranking that compares English proficiency in non-English-speaking countries every year since 2011. The ranking is based on an online survey taken by 2.3 million people in 2019.

The study takes into account the presence of the English language in the workplace and analyzes English proficiency among employees and senior staff members.

This year, according to the EF, the 10 countries with the best English language proficiency are the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Singapore, South Africa, Finland, Austria, Luxembourg, and Germany.

The latest ranking also shows that Ukraine’s neighbors Belarus (47), Russia (48), Romania (16) and Poland (11) have higher English proficiency. The only European countries that are behind Ukraine are Albania (50), Georgia (56), Turkey (79) and Azerbaijan (85).

Apart from that, the ranking shows Kyiv having moderate English proficiency, with Dubai and Tokyo being placed below the Ukrainian capital.
