Ukraine’s General Staff has claimed the total number of Russian troops killed or wounded during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine has surpassed 200,000.

The figure means Russia has lost a number of troops so large – 200,590 – it surpasses many countries’ entire serving armed forces.

Only three NATO armies have more total regular troops than that number – the US, Turkey and France, while the other 28 members all have fewer troops. Even the bottom 16 countries between them do not have more.

The British Army ranks fourth with 194,000 regular soldiers, fewer than Russian losses.

The official Ukrainian number is roughly corroborated by other sources. At a briefing on 29 March, Sky News reported that UK Secretary of State for Defence Ben Wallace estimated Russia’s full-scale invasion casualties – those killed and wounded – had already surpassed 220,000.

On 27 February, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a US analytical institute, estimated Russia’s killed, wounded and missing losses to be between 200,000 and 250,000.

Ukraine’s Channel 24 did a comparison of Russian losses to the size of NATO’s regular military ground forces. It revealed that the smallest 16 armies added together have only 193,000 total regular soldiers, while another 12 countries have fewer than the 200,000 losses Russia has taken since February 24, 2022.
