When placed by the court order under 60 days house arrest on April 1, Metropolitan Pavel, the vicar of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), recently accused of justifying Russian aggression, complained that he had “nowhere to spend the night” as his “small house” in Voronkiv village near Kyiv did not have light, communications, beds, refrigerator, etc.

His “small house” turned out to be a luxury mansion on a 16 hectare land plot with a 580 square meter two-floor main house, a 170 square meter guest house, a guardhouse and a gazebo, as a journalist investigation of Bihus.info unveiled.

In 2016, the mansion was listed for sale for $1.3 million. The advertisement stated that it had luxury furniture, marble floors and expensive appliances.

Metropolitan Pavel has another 546 square-meter house in central Kyiv, with a swimming pool, sauna, Turkish bath and wine cellar, as journalists reported.

Journalists also discovered that the Metropolitan leases a six hectare land plot from the Voronkiv rural council. The plot is subleased by businessman Oleksandr Matvienko. In turn, Matvienko owns the company “MPL Agro” registered at the address where Metropolitan’s plot is located. Journalists suggested that the company’s name contains the initials for “Metropolitan Pavel Lebed” (“Lebed” is his surname).

Additionally, Pavel drives Mercedes 400 registered to Matvienko.

The company controls over 1,100 hectares of agricultural land in the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions, and breeds cows and pigs.

As journalists suggested, the Metropolitan is the de facto final beneficiary of the company
