She admitted that the support of member states and foundations was outstanding last year.
“We received $3.4 billion in 2022 to respond to the needs of the people affected by the war in Ukraine. So far, this is 80 percent of what we asked for. So far this year, we received 15 percent, but we will continue, and I will continue to advocate,” Brown emphasized.
She explained that developing a plan for aid takes months, as they gather information on the number of people in need and consult with them. Brown added that the UN plans to allocate $5.6 billion for humanitarian aid in Ukraine in 2023, with a portion intended for Ukrainians who have fled to neighboring countries and $3.9 billion earmarked for those within Ukraine.
According to Brown, in 2022, the UN’s primary goal was to assist those who lost their homes and those who had to flee within the country or abroad. The second priority was to ensure that people in rural communities affected by the war did not freeze or starve to death during the winter. The third priority was to provide assistance in areas recaptured by Ukraine and communities within 20 kilometers of the front line.
