“We have to admit that the previous composition of the Cabinet of Ministers has not completely fulfilled the assigned tasks on ensuring the introduction of reform and economic growth. This led to the fact that the results in 2012 were much worse than expected,” he said in an interview with the Komsomolskaya Pravda v Ukraine newspaper, excerpts of which were published on the Web site of the newspaper on Thursday (the full interview will be released in Friday’s issue).

When asked what criteria were used to select ministers and why the president decided to leave Mykola Azarov in the post of prime minister, Yanukovych said: “I know Mykola Yanovych Azarov as an experienced and responsible manager. It was his task to save Ukraine from default, which was predicted by many foreign experts in 2010.”

He said that the new government had been instructed, along with scientists and entrepreneurs, to take measures on the restructuring of the economy in order to expand the domestic market.

“Among the key tools to achieve this goal, I see the introduction of an active policy of import substitution, the transition to a systemic policy of social justice and the continuation of the policy of deregulation,” Yanukovych said, adding that candidates for the posts of ministers were selected on the basis of the tasks set.
