British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is in Moscow for talks, with her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, aimed at staving off a major Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking from Moscow, Truss said that the UK wanted “Russia to take the path of diplomacy,” adding that: “A war in Ukraine would be disastrous for the Russian and Ukrainian people and for European security.”
Russia has massed around 130,000 troops along the border with Ukraine and demanded NATO withdraw from near its borders and that Ukraine be barred from ever joining the alliance. Kyiv and Western capitals have rejected those demands and have threatened severe sanctions on Russia if it invades Ukraine again.
The UK government is currently preparing a package of sanctions legislation that would be put to parliament and implemented in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
