MINSK – The Belarusian Supreme Court has opened a civil case based on a Justice Ministry lawsuit seeking to shut down the Union of Belarusian Writers, the union said in a statement on Telegram on Aug. 17.

“The Supreme Court has opened a civil case on a Justice Ministry lawsuit for the Union of Belarusian Writers to be shut down,” the statement said.

A preliminary hearing in the run-up to proceedings has been scheduled for Aug. 24 at the court, it said.

A representative of the Union of Belarusian Writers is to show up with documents confirming their powers to take part in the proceedings and submit a written response to the lawsuit.
