Russia expects that the new contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to Europe that is expected to go into effect in 2020 will be long-term, Energy Minister Alexander Novak told reporters.

“Again, this is the subject of agreements between commercial companies. But according to practice, this is a long-term contract,” Novak said.

“New norms in current Ukrainian legislation have not been finally implemented yet. Current Ukrainian legislation makes it possible in general, in principle to extend existing contracts. If some final changes are made that will change the legal and regulatory framework, then it will be the subject of discussion between economic entities based on the new legislation. As of today, there are all possibilities, and it does not contradict current legislation to talk about the extension of the current contract,” Novak said.
