You're reading: Hutsul cheese becomes first Ukrainian product with protected geographical indication

The Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine on November 11, 2029 issued a certificate on the registration of the right to use the protected geographical indication of the origin of the product for the Hutsul Sheep Bryndza cheese.

According to a posting on the UkrAPK portal, the Hutsul Sheep Bryndza cheese is the first Ukrainian geographical indication meeting European requirements to registration and is entitled to the recognition by the EU.

The Association of Producers of Traditional Carpathian Highland Cheese submitted an application for the registration of the geographical indication on December 19, 2018.

Hutsul Sheep Bryndza is made of mountain sheep milk in accordance with traditions dating back to the 15th century on the summer high mountain pastures of the Carpathians. The cheese production zone covers Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk regions and part of Chernivtsi region.
