You're reading: Kyiv road caves in

A section of Pavlovska street in Kyiv's Shevchenkivsky district caved in on July 22.

“The pavement’s sinking probably resulted from yesterday’s heavy rain. At the moment we don’t know whether anyone is hurt. Specialists are working at the site,” a spokesperson at Shevchenkivsky district office of Kyivavtodor said.

This is not an isolated incident. On March 12, 2009, a 2-meter pit appeared in Karavaevi dachi district as a result of heavy spring rains, which washed away soil supporting the pavement.
Sometimes cars fall into the holes. On March 24, 2009, in a pit several meters deep trapped a Vokswagen on Symyrenko street.

In a related event, a Dnipropetrovsk street swallowed a truck whole on July 20.
