About 1,000 people rallied in front of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, calling on it to dismantle the law that will open up the farmland market in July.

On June 3, the court began considering a motion by a group of Ukrainian lawmakers to recognize the land market law as unconstitutional. Organizers of the protest warned that oligarchic and transnational interests are seeking to buy up land that “belongs to the Ukrainian people,” a common refrain of opponents to the land market reform.

Starting July 1, Ukrainian citizens will be able to buy plots of farmland up to 100 hectares in size. On January 1, 2024, the cap will be raised to 10,000 hectares and companies will be allowed to take part in the purchases.
