Film festival Molodist is an essential event for film lovers. Kyiv Post has picked seven films to watch at this year's Molodist on Oct. 25 - Nov. 2.

‘Nymphomaniac’ (director’s cut)

The director’s cut of the scandalous movie ‘Nymphomaniac’ by Lars von Trier will be screened in Ukraine for the first time. The film tells a somewhat brutal story of a woman who suffers from sexual disorder. The film captures her life since childhood till her fifties. The film has been received warmly by critics. A director’s cut version without censorship is five-hour long.

‘Björk: Biophilia Live’

“Björk: Biophilia Live” is a documentary by Peter Strickland based on the concert of a singer she held to support her new album. Her performance is a combination of original instruments, bright costumes, chorus, video effects and even episodes from the scientific movies. The film shows the connections between music, nature and space in Björk’s music.

‘In the Basement’

The documentary film “In the Basement” by Austrian director Ulrich Seidl is about what ordinary people do in their basements. Some use the basements for weird hobbies, for collecting expensive things or even conduct sexual experiments in there. Getting in the basement director explores peoples’ passions and shows their souls.

‘Brothers. The Final Confession’

Viktoria Trofymenko’s work “Brothers. The Final Confession” represents Ukraine in the Molodist international competition. The film is a story of a writer who comes to a hutsul village and occasionally stays in a house of an old man. The man turns out to have a brother who lives nearby. Once they used to share everything: mother, toys, right to be called the best, and even a woman. Now the two old brothers have a competition of who dies the last.

Babylon’13

Babylon’13 is a team of directors from Kyiv National Karpenko-Kary University who filmed the events of Maidan and in Ukraine’s east. They believe that documentary is a tool that is able to change people’s perception of reality. Selection of their short films will also be presented at ‘Molodist’ festival.

‘Difret’

Ethiopian films are not frequent in the Ukraine’s movie theaters. “Difret” by Zeresenay Berhane Megari is part of the Molodist international contest. Director raises the issue of women oppression, telling a story of a 14-year-old girl who killed a man when he was trying to kidnap her. Kidnapping a woman for marriage is one of Ethiopian native traditions. However, her attorney claims the girl was forced defend herself.

‘Trubach’

Ukraine’s Anatoly Mateshko is presenting his comedy “Trubach” in the International Competition “Molodist for Children”. It’s a Hollywood-style musical film about a talented boy who plays a trumpet in a band. The band is about to enter an important competition, when suddenly the band’s artistic director gets into a hospital.
