Independence Day Celebration


On Aug. 24 Ukrainians will be celebrating the 23rd birthday of the country’s independence. We offer the most interesting events of the Independence Day weekend.

Military Parade

There has been a lot of controversy on whether there should be a military parade this year, given that an actual war is raging in Ukraine’s east. But the authorities decided to hold the parade. Some 1,500 people and 49 armored carriers will move along Khreshchatyk Street as a demonstration of Ukraine’s military power.

Flower Show

The traditional flower show in Pechersk Landscape Park includes flower compositions themed after Ukrainian traditions and culture. More than 430,000 flowers were planted on the territory of the park to form ornaments and pictures. In obvious reference to the political situation the show is named “Ukraine is One.”

Kyivska Rus Park Independence Celebration

Kyivska Rus Park offers to celebrate Independence Day in the atmosphere of ancient Kyiv. Various games, traditional fair, horse-riding and theatrical performances are on the program for Aug. 24. Designer Katya Zaluzhna will present her new collection of accessories and the guests will be able to take part in the lottery to win one of the items.

Nebo Fest

The outdoor festival “Nebo Fest” is a perfect option for a family celebration of Independence Day. It will take place in the Botanic Garden in Kyiv and include dozens of master classes on cinematography, folk crafts and cooking and even moto-biking. Also, there will be screenings of Ukrainian-made films and music performances.

Race in vyshyvankas

The very first race in vyshyvankas, traditional embroidered shirts, will be held at Expo Center. All participants are supposed to come in vyshyvankas to be allowed to participate and cover a distance of one, five or 10 kilometers.

Kyiv Beer Fest


Kyiv Beer Fest runs from Aug. 28-31. The program features outdoor performances by Ukrainian pop and rock bands like MadHeads, Tartak, TNMK and Skryabin. Beer lovers can choose from 100 varieties. For more information, go to www.facebook.com/events/312558685571216.

‘Blue Jasmine’


“Blue Jasmine” is a 2013 American drama film written and directed by Woody Allen. The movie tells a story of a rich woman who falls into poverty and homelessness after her husband is sent to prison for fraud. The film received positive comments from critics and Kate Blanchett won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in it. In Kinopanorama, it will run in English with Ukrainian subtitles.

Breakdance Battle School


The annual international breakdance event, the Breakdance Battle School, brings up together the best teams from all over the globe. Apart from witnessing this epic competition, guests will be able to take part in dancing workshops by famous choreographers like Kuja (USA), Xiscol (Netherlands), Junior (France). Robbie Williams Tribute


One of the most popular British singers ever, Robbie Williams released 10 albums and sold 55 million copies. Ukrainian cover band Beetle Juice Cover will play some of his most famous songs at a special tribute show at Kyiv’s Caribbean Club.

Dynamo Kyiv vs. Chornomorets Odesa


This time football fans will be enjoying the meeting of Dynamo (Kyiv) and Chornomorets (Odesa). The teams currently occupy the third and fourth spots on the Ukrainian League rating.

International Short Films Festival


New Vision International Short Film Festival is held annually in Zhovten Cinema and aims to provide the viewers with the best short films from different countries. This time the program includes only “sunny” films. The audience will be able to enjoy such films as “To breathe” (Germany), “Mona” (France), “Pig in the House” (Spain) and “Dictionary” (Spain). The movies will be screened in the original language with Ukrainian subtitles.
