The resignation of National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Governor Valeriya Gontareva without restoring confidence in the institution of the NBU is pointless, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said.

“I believe that in this situation one needs to take a responsible decision, and now this decision is up to the head the National Bank,” he said in an interview with leading TV channels on Feb. 27.

Yatsenyuk recalled that the National Bank governor can be removed from the office only by the Verkhovna Rada at a request of the president, and only based on the resignation letter of the NBU governor.

“The problem is not the name of the head of the National Bank, but the lack of confidence in the institution of the National Bank,” the prime minister said.
