You're reading: Yatseniuk: Shortage of gas in Naftogaz’s storage facilities comes to 13 billion cubic meters

The actual and accounting amount of gas in the underground gas storage facilities of Naftogaz Ukrainy differs by 13 billion cubic meters, Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatseniuk has said from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada.

“In fact, there is 7.2 billion cubic meters of gas in Naftogaz’s
storage facilities and there should be more than 20 billion cubic
meters. I did not steal the gas,” he said.

As reported, the reserves of marketable gas in Ukrainian underground
gas storage facilities as of December 31, 2013 amounted to 14.765
billion cubic meters, in particular at Ukrtransgaz – 13.952 billion
cubic meters, and Chornomornaftogaz – 813 million cubic meters.

Ukraine in 2013 pumped into underground gas storage facilities 11.635
billion cubic meters. The taking of natural gas in 2013 exceeded
pumping by 8.9%, amounting to 12.665 billion cubic meters. In
particular, gas taking from Ukrtransgaz was 12.328 billion cubic meters,
from Chornomornaftogaz – 337 million cubic meters.

Ukraine has 13 underground gas storage facilities with a total active
capacity of more than 31 billion cubic meters. Twelve gas facilities
and the system of trunk gas pipelines are operated by Ukrtransgaz,
another gas storage facility – by Chornomornaftogaz, 100% of which
belongs to the state.

The specific of the Ukrainian gas transportation system is that in
winter to provide transit it needs large reserves of gas in storage
facilities: gas coming from Russia is physically consumed in the
industrial east and gas goes to Europe from underground facilities
located in the west of Ukraine.
