You're reading: Van Rompuy: European Commission by EU summit in June should develop action plan for energy security

EU leaders have instructed the European Commission to develop an action plan in the field of energy security by the time of the next EU summit in June.

President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said in Brussels
after the EU summit that “the leaders appealed to the Commission with
the request to develop a concrete plan of actions by the summit that
will take place in June, as the basis for a comprehensive security
framework in the field of energy security.”

“We are serious about improving our energy security and will discuss
the issue in June and October. Europe was built up from the coal and
steel community, and 64 years later in the new conditions it is quite
clear that we must move forward to the energy community,” he said.

Furthermore, during the discussion of this issue at the summit the EU
leaders called for “a new approach to the energy business.”

“We need to work more as a team when negotiating on contracts, share
more information and be more transparent under the terms of the
contract. This is all to increase our overall trade effect,” the
official stated.
