Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov has discussed with U.S. Senator Robert Portman the issue of holding joint exercises of Ukrainian and American law enforcement agencies, as well as the possibility of providing arms to Ukraine and aid to internally displaced persons.

The meeting took place in Kyiv on April 9, it was also attended by First Deputy Interior Minister Eka Zguladze, Deputy Interior Minister for European integration Tigran Avakyan and the U.S. delegation, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry’s press service reported.

The sides discussed bilateral cooperation aimed at improving the training of Ukrainian law-enforcers, as well as servicemen of the National Guard of Ukraine in the view of the need to counter the terrorist activities of illegal armed groups in Ukraine’s east. “In addition, the meeting participants discussed the possibility of providing weapons to Ukraine, as well as assistance to temporary displaced persons,” the report says.

Avakov thanked the U.S. government and the Senate for their support in the reform of the Interior Ministry. The U.S. delegates reaffirmed their readiness to further develop bilateral relations.
