You're reading: Hendrik: Ukraine not local issue, it is a matter of European security

The situation in Ukraine is important for the security of the whole of Europe, Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves has said.

During his speech at the YES summit in Kyiv on Sept. 11, Ilves said that the fundamental structure of the European security system had been destroyed.

According to him, this referred not only to the system prohibiting the annexation of a territory on the grounds of a particular ethnic group residing on it, but also the prohibition of aggression being broken down.

This year the key underlying principles of security in Europe have been destroyed, the Estonian president said.

He said that Europe should stop this process.

According to Ilves, Ukraine was attacked because it decided to choose its own path of development, one different from Russia.

In his opinion, the Ukrainian matter is not local. Ukraine has become the focus of security problems in Europe, but any other country may soon follow in its wake, he said.

Everyone in the EU should support Ukraine and should see the restoration of peace and security on the continent as the main task, Ilves said.
