You're reading: Tymoshenko counts on EU assistance in ending war in eastern regions

Leader of the Batkivschyna Party Yulia Tymoshenko discussed Ukraine's relations with the European Union and the situation in eastern Ukraine in talks with Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini, the party's press service said on July 7.

“Following the revolution we have all prerequisites to become an integral part of the European Union. The recent signing of the association agreement with the EU was a historic event for us. But we need its earliest possible ratification now. The war cannot obstruct democratic reforms in our state, or its movement towards the European Union or ratification of the association agreement. But the war must be stopped as soon as possible. We count on the European Union’s support in this respect,” Tymoshenko said.

Mogherini in turn said that, “Italy supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.” “The signing of the Agreement is very important for us. It is the point of destination we have reached despite all obstacles. But on the other hand, it is the start of the path of reforms for Ukraine, while early ratification is the key issue in this. You may count on Italy’s and the European Union’s assistance in this processes,” the Italian foreign minister said.

Tymoshenko thanked Mogherini for visiting Ukraine “in such a difficult moment for our state.” “And yet, regardless of the time of trials, Ukraine’s state system and freedom are being strengthened,” Tymoshenko said.
