You're reading: Turchynov says oil depot blaze may have been caused by arson

The fire that broke out at an oil depot near Kyiv may have been intentional, says Oleksandr Turchynov, the secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council (NSDC).

“The theories the interior ministry is probing attest that an intentional arson is not ruled out. The motivation is clear since there was an investigation around this oil depot,” he said on Channel 5 on June 11.

The arson may have been committed to conceal the real volumes of the fuel stored there, Turchynov said.

Another possible theory is violation of the safety regulations during an attempt to falsify fuel, he said.

A sabotage is not ruled out but “the first two theories are the likeliest,” he said.
