Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in New York to discuss bilateral cooperation and the Donbas situation.

The Japanese prime minister gave credit to the peace efforts of the Ukrainian president and said there was no alternative to the Minsk agreements, Poroshenko’s press service has reported.

Abe told the Ukrainian leader that Tokyo would deny recognition to the Donbas election outcomes.

The Ukrainian president thanked Japan for the extensive financial assistance supporting economic stabilization, reforms and important infrastructural projects in Ukraine.

Poroshenko told the Japanese prime minister that Ukraine had finalized internal procedures required for the enforcement of the intergovernmental agreement on a loan of approximately $900 million for modernizing the Bortnychi sewage treatment plant. The document was signed on June 6, 2015, during Abe’s visit to Ukraine.

“The Ukrainian side expressed its interest in Japanese investments in the Ukrainian economy in the context of the keynote interstate agreement on assistance and mutual protection of investment signed at the beginning of this year,” the report said.

Ways to bolster Ukraine’s energy security were highlighted as well. The president and the prime minister lauded cooperation between Ukraine and Japan in cleaning up the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear accident.

In addition, Poroshenko and Abe spoke about cooperation between Ukraine and G7 countries in the context of Japan’s presidency of that group starting on Jan. 1, 2016.

The sides agreed that the Ukrainian chief of state would visit Japan next year.
