The European Union delegation to Ukraine has reemphasized the importance of creating a selection commission comprised of professionals to select the candidates for the anti-corruption office.

‘We are aware that civil society has voiced concern about the ongoing process to set up the Selection Commission, which will later decide on the future leadership and staff of the anti-corruption prosecution office. We hope the candidates, suggested to be introduced to the structure of the selection commission, will correspond with the highest professional and ethical standards. We expect that candidates nominated to the Selection Commission will match the highest possible professional and ethical standards. The European Union is closely following the selection process of the members of the Selection Commission, also under the context of the Visa Liberalization Action Plan,’ Deputy Head of the European Union Delegation to Ukraine Thomas Frellesen said in a statement forwarded to Interfax-Ukraine.

The independence and operational autonomy of the specialized anti-corruption prosecution office is of paramount importance to the efficient and effective work of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, Frellesen added.

‘The key aspect of this process is credibility, but it is hard to achieve that without the transparent process of selection and appointment of dignified members of the selection commission, who will support all the main parties involved,’Frellesen said.
