You're reading: Steinmeier hopes for swift meeting of Contact Group on Ukraine

BRUSSELS - German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on Monday that the Contact Group on Ukraine should hold talks in the very near future.

“I hope that the Contact Group will meet as soon as possible,” the German minister told a press conference in Brussels.

“I hope the parties will be able to agree on a demarcation line (between militias and the Ukrainian army),” he added.

“It is a small step necessary to observe the Minsk accords, but in my view one of the most important ones is to establish the so-called demarcation line and subsequently withdraw heavy weaponry and troops. Concurrently, it is necessary to establish a buffer zone which would be under OSCE monitoring,” the German minister said.

The Trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine consists of OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) Special Representative Heidi Tagliavini, former Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma and Russian Ambassador to Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov.
