You're reading: Saboteurs detained near Schastia are Russian citizens, not ‘Luhansk People’s Republic’ militants – SBU

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has denied reports in the Russian media that the saboteurs detained in the town of Schastia, Luhansk Oblast, on May 16 are not Russian servicemen and do not have Russian citizenship.

“I want to disprove all rumors and insinuations. I’m talking precisely about Russian citizens. They are testifying now. Investigators are working with them. And we can confidently say that in this case the matter directly concerns Russia servicemen,” SBU chief advisor Markiyan Lubkivsky said at a briefing in Kyiv on Monday after being asked about reports saying that those detained in Schastia are members of the so-called people’s militia of the Luhansk People’s Republic.

Lubkivsky said that thus far no relatives or officials have tried to get in touch with the Ukrainian government regarding the two detained individuals.

“They’re arrested and are in Kyiv now, they are receiving medical aid…The relatives haven’t got in touch so far…We’re intended to give these men the possibility of talking with their relatives,” he said.
