You're reading: Russian customs control heightened at border with Ukraine

Russia's Federal Customs Service (FCS) has beefed up its control at the country's border with Ukraine, but is still letting goods get through.

On March 20, Ukraine’s association of international truckers said that Russian customs agencies, “according to the initial reports, as of midnight on March 19, 2014, stopped the entry of goods [of Ukrainian origin] from Ukraine at [Russian-Ukrainian border-crossing points].” However, “reports of a complete ban on [the movement of goods into Russia] are inaccurate, but somewhat of a strengthening of control is [justified by] information about the possible [transport into Russia] of prohibited items, including weapons,” the head of the FCS public relations division, Alexander Smelyakov said.

But no halt to the movement of goods is on the table, Smelyakov said.
